"Why did I get married?"
So I was watching “why did I get married “ by Tyler Perry for the umpteenth time, and I couldn’t but notice the part where the third couple, overweight Shelia (Jill Scott) and Mike (Richard T. Jones) were on the plane to Colorado for their annual week-long reunion and Shelia is made to deplane because of her weight …and she had to drive the long distance in the snow. Are people actually made to deplane because of their size? I mean I have sen it in movies but ermmI like to believe it doesn't really happen.
I asked a lot of my friends if they have ever witnessed anything like that and one of them actually confirmed it, she said she witnessed it once. That is so embarrassing. If “fat” people really need to purchase two tickets, couldn’t they have been told before boarding, why should it always be done in the plane? And I’m also thinking is there some form of scale to measure who buys two tickets and who doesn’t?
I later found out that some airlines have a policy that says “If you can't fit in one seat, you have to buy two. And if you can't find two on the flight you showed up for, you'll have to buy two on a later flight”. Although I think I understand these airlines’ point of view, they sell space and a price has been created for that space and so if you take more than that amount of space you have to pay more.
It’s just like the weighing in your boxes before any take off, if your stuff weighs more than the standard kg, you get to pay extra. You wouldn’t say its discrimination against people that don’t have as much load; it just won’t be fair to make everyone pay the same rate for their stuff, right?
Slim people are be are entitled to complain because they paid for one seat, just as the fat person beside them did, and they are not getting what they paid for because the person next to them is taking up more than that for which they paid. I know the money paid not only covers our passage from one destination to another, but it also covers for the amount of space on the plane as evidenced by the price difference between first class and coach. I get all that.
I just think there is a better way to address the issue especially because the it lies with the ground crews and the flight attendants to determine whether or not a person is required to buy two seats, I think it would be more comfortable to have seats in a private area at the airport, just like that thingy that checks if our luggage fit,..So everyone is made to sit on the chair or seat… like some form of measurement and if any part of you doesn’t fit in the seat then you can make plans to buy a second seat either on that plane or the next. My point is, any decision should happen BEFORE you get on the plane and no one should ever go through the embarrassment of being kicked off a flight because of size.

not so fair but yeah..a fat person might make the slim person uncomfortable..buh i think the two seats policy should be implemented off board..,maybe at the counter or ticket office..not on board in view off a multitude..so not fair..
ReplyDeleteyeah I saw that in the movie and was surprised cos we once had a fat lady on our row and she wasn't asked to leave or buy two seats. That last picture says it all I guess and I agree with you there should be somewhere before boarding to check.
ReplyDeletelol found d solutions funny but i agree it shuldnt be done in a way that embarrasses the individual. it should be done before boarding the plane. the post popped 2 random but related issues into my mind which are a pet-peeves of mine so pls permit me to digress.......pls ppl shuld be considerate as to how much they pull their seats back to rest, especially in economy on tight flights like the london to lagos flights .... ive been close to causing a scene cos of dis lol ...bt i behaved like an olori nd let it slide. secondly, they shld b stricter on how much hand luggage u can bring and d size. some ppl travel with 6 bags.....check in 3 and carry the rest as hand luggage ahn ahn :)
ReplyDelete@Dammy Jewel & Myne Whitman: Yes I can't imagine traveling hours in an uncomfortable position, somewhere before boarding will make a lot of sense
ReplyDelete@Olori: Lol at "...bt i behaved like an olori nd let it slide"... People will alway do things to annoy you, thank God you chose to behave like the olori that you are..lol
@All: Thanks for dropping by
I've never actually seen it happen in person but yeah, those are the rules. IDK how old that rule is though because i don't remember hearing about it until i was in my late teens (i started flying when i was 7 or 8).
ReplyDeleteAs for the carry-on issue, IDK about anywhere else but here in the states you get 1 carry on bag and 1 personal item (so like 1 small suitcase and a purse), and if it doesn't fit in the overhead or under your seat, they are gonna make you check it (which by that time usually means it'll end up on a different flight).
Erm.. I once heard about this before but not seen it. An airport attendant while passing a comment mentioned about weights of people been assessed before the entire tickets are sold out. I don't understand too as many people don't even show up to the airport until their time of departure and nobody fills in their weights while trying to purchase a ticked... lol

I just remember watching that scene in the movie and being really upset at the way her husband handled it. SMH. Terrible. Like you said I get where the airlines are coming from, but they should make sure they are very diplomatic in the way they address the issue. There's no need to embarrass anyone.
ReplyDeleteI felt so sorry for her watching that scene, i mean, you'll expect that the husband shld stand up to anyone who does that to her not the other way round.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, airlines IMO should put in on their terms & conditions either online or at the ticketing office so people do not have to go through such embarrassment.
BTW, do you know that New Zealand wouldnt even give you a visa if you're obese? I read the story of a couple who were seperated when the hubby was transfered there. The wife had to lose weight before she was allowed entry! The claim their health facilities cannot cater for such!

Coming back from Turkey a few months ago, the seat belt (at the furthest it would go) 'refused' to fit round me. (It fitted when we were going just a week earlier - just about). After about fifteen minutes of trying, I gave up. When the air hostess came round to check that everyone had their seat selts on, I had my 'good size' bag strategically placed on my lap and gave her a don't-you-dare-ask-me-to-put-my-bag-down stare while smiling sweetly and telling her I had it on. I got away with it and spent the entire four hour flight seat belt-less. I had no idea it would happen to me and I just had to manage the situation. Not funny. I still wonder what would have happened if I was found out.
ReplyDelete@olori...seriously we naija people ehn...i was travelling sometime last year and a nigerian woman had a hand luggage the size of my box that i had checked in..God help us oo
ReplyDelete@adura i love ur skills...not funny buh..u are skillful ma..
LOL!!! I have never come across any such incident. But my husband used to say, you are putting in lot of weight, let them not deplane you:P Bets solution would be to check weight of every passenger and holding back the voluminous and voluptuous ones;)
ReplyDelete...so embarrassing....am yet to watch the movie.....lol @ olori's comment...yes, i saw such ' hand-luggages' it was scary o!
ReplyDeleteI think they should be informed before they get on the plane
ReplyDelete@LadyNGO: Chai! People can like to carry load...lol
ReplyDelete@LDP: lol@ peopel filling in their weight
@Mimi B: Diplomacy is the word jare, no one should have to go through that embarrassment
@P.E.T. Projects: I totally agree with you on airlines IMO putting ds info in on their terms & conditions either online or at the ticketing office, Na wa o @ New zealand
@Adura Ojo (Naijalines): Woow! that was *&^%$(#) and I like that the sound of "don't-you-dare-ask-me-to-put-my-bag-down stare" lol
@Dammy Jewel: Na only God fit help us jae
@Cloud Nine:lol at voluminous and voluptuous ones
@Ibhade: Youshould see the movie..those luggages ehn...na wa
@ilola:Thats what I think too
@All Thanks for stopping by
Blessings....
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately this does happen. They have gone so far as to let overweight people pay for two seats until there was a big discrimination suit.
Loved this movie and the sequel...
Very lovely movie i must admit...
ReplyDelete"It’s just like the weighing in your boxes before any take off, if your stuff weighs more than the standard kg, you get to pay extra. You wouldn’t say its discrimination against people that don’t have as much load; it just won’t be fair to make everyone pay the same rate for their stuff, right? "............
i want to disagree on this a bit by throwing some few questions...,
>is it my fault that I am on the big side? it could be my fault that i have extra luggage but not all fat pple are fat becos they desire to be, it could be heriditary at times.........
>what if i do not have extra cash to purchase an extra seat? not all big pple can afford the affordables....
good suggestion on payment for two seats and being told before you board but consider the questions i raised also.....
nice one, dear!
I just bought the film this evening..would watch it later..maybe tomorrow, to understand what it's all about..tnx.
ReplyDeleteYea I remember that scene, the husband was just so mean! I felt bad for her.
ReplyDeleteI really think it's bad to take people unawares, it would be better if they could make it in such a way that people have ample time to plan for such occurrences.
I concur. They should at least let them know before getting on the flight.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Does this actually happen? Making a person deplane because they are overweight is Soooooo embarrassing. I was once on a flight sitting between two plus size people on both sides and it was not very comfortable for either me or them. But it is bad not to tell them before hand that they may have to deplane if two seats are not available.
ReplyDeletei've never seen it happen. Its just that if someone overweight sits beside you , you would be squashed and its uncomfortable for you to travel like that. Maybe airlines should make seats for bigger people so we can all fit on the same plane. Instead of having those small seats
ReplyDelete@Rhapsody B: Nice movie abi? I like it too
ReplyDelete@omoba-adeteju: I get what you mean, but I'm sure you know the Airlines wont think that way...but I guess life is just what it is
@Ibhade: I'm sure you enjoyed the movie
@MsJB & os:Yea, that's what I think too
@Meera Sundararajan:I hear it does happen, never seen it though
@Sisi Yemmie: I know it can be uncomfortable... provision for bigger seats will be perfect
@All: Thanks for dropping by
I love this movie. I really felt bad for Sheila when she had to get off the plane. Her so-called husband didn't make the matter any easier. Anyways...those who are 'fat' or 'overweight' shouldn't be to feel inferior because of the body image.
ReplyDeleteIt would probably be uncomfortable to sit by an overweight person. Reason being...you would have to move over just to make sure they get enough space to sit down. Maybe there should be special seats assigned to them just so they are more comfortable and relax.
That's my thought...
