I just want a better world!

The world in its entirety is becoming crazy, war-crazed, hate-crazed and especially sex- crazed, everything and anything now gets linked to sex. Music videos, movies, advert placements- all have some bit of sexual innuendo. I put on the television the other day and I saw a half naked woman advertising a drink. I’m standing there and I’m saying to myself “how are drinks and half naked women related”?.

The house music everywhere leaves scenes of sexual acts on the mind of its listeners, almost all the songs are about ladies…well, sex sells you’ll say, also no thanks to technology the voltage of immorality can freely flow into our PCs and mobile phones, people can now engage in cyber-sex, download pornography or even “sext”.

All these and then we are questioning why HIV/AIDS is claiming so much lives yearly. We wonder why our teenage girls get pregnant and opt for abortion or even drop their babies by the way side? We are amazed at how sexual abuse or rape became the order of the day? We even blame the “commercial sex workers” when all we see everyday tells us something about sex and ignites the passion in us.

I continually ask myself, who really do I blame? Our mass medlia? Or our homes? The foundation of the homes are becoming very shaky and it’s opening up our kids to dangerous lifestyles. Immorality has become a norm and its funny because the society encourages it, I imagine trying to fight or stand up for sexual purity today is like swimming against the strong currents of the sea, it must take a lot of strength and courage especially among our teens. It’s become a daily struggle to stay clean, you’ll be surprised at what goes on in our high schools and universities. Talk to some of these young people and I’ll probably be begging you to pick up your jaws.

I would like to say here that I’m not anti-sex and I understand that our sexuality is not a punishment but a gift from God. I mean God could have devised other means for babies to be born, he could have made us lay eggs like chickens but no he chose to make us sexual beings. Sex is a beautiful gift, but its abuse has done so much damage.

I can write up pages of how bad the abuse of sex or immorality has eaten up deep into our world but I’m writing this because I want a better world for the younger generation.

Yes, it’s the mass media’s fault someone might say but I say thank God our Television sets are not one-channelled, we can decide to change channels and become selective about the things we watch and the music we listen to. The parental control on the DSTV isn’t there for fun, we can choose to control what we expose our children to. We can even set tabs on our PCS and restrict the sites our children or teenagers visit. Yea, what of their mobile phones you’ll ask…I totally agree we don’t have control over their mobile phones but at least we could exercise our authourity over the things we have control over.

Sexual education is more important now than ever, our 2year-olds should know about their body from us and learn to ‘guard’ them or keep them private like it’s supposed to be so some scumbag won’t take advantage of their innocence. Watch the people you leave your children with, some of the said uncles and aunties do most of the damage. House helps..hmmm, only God can choose the right ones for us these days. Lets learn to be part of our children’s daily lives, talk to them you’ll be surprised at how much they know. Our teenagers shouldn’t find out about their sexuality from Mills & Boons like most of us did.

Let’s cut off the supply of whatever fuels our lust – Porn movies, magazines, novels, TV shows that fill us with sexual temptations. Let’s stop reducing people to objects of our sexual desires, keep a check on your thoughts and imaginations (that 4-year old girl/ boy isn’t going to satisfy your sexual needs trust me), men please keep in mind that women are not sex objects we are dignified individuals, women please adopt a modest way of dressing, let the entertainment industry show us less of women’s nakedness and less of men’s muscle definitions.

If by some stroke of bad luck you are a paedophile, a sex-addict, a porn lover or you just don’t seem to have control over your sexual glands, I implore you to please get help, see a therapist, a doctor or even go for deliverance sessions, whatever you have to do, just please stop damaging people by abusing or raping them. Some people just never get pass it( it forms the basis of their entire life and living becomes an illusion) , we wonder why we have so much wounded people trying to wound others, it all started because someone failed to get help.

All these crimes and craziness starts from the heart because all our actions and inactions finds its root from there. Those suggestions up there are quite simple but I like to believe they will be helpful and I think every person should pick one or two things from them, I can’t force anyone to make them, but if and when you decide to do your bit, its effect on our society at large will be so great.

I’m done folding my arms and seeing the madness continue, I see a cute little girl sometimes and I feel for her because I don’t know what the uncle next door is doing to her, truth is I’m willing to swim upstream against the world’s current prevailing immorality. I fear for my unborn girl and boy. I fear that with the torrents of impurity around us HIV/AIDS will not go away, rape will become a norm, sexual abuse will become the next big thing, I fear that unwanted babies will continually be dropped by the trash site.

If you’ve ever thought of changing the world, this here is a tiny bit you can do. It starts here and now with you & I. You might think it doesn’t concern you, and may be it does not but I have learnt to do things for posterity sake, for the sake of the unborn generation.
I’m talking and hoping to see a change from immorality to morality, I’m talking of having decent people as friends, family and neighbours. The things I talked about might seem so little but believe me, it’s the foundation of all that’s wrong with our morals today. I just want to see a better society, a better Nigeria and an improved world.

P.S: I’m willing to be a part of any voluntary organisation or NGOs that reach out in these areas and I will appreciate any leading.

  1. This is a very thoughtful post.We do take lots of things for-grated until they escalate into enormous things.I hope people will take the issue of 'sex' and it's abuse very seriously.

  3. God bless you Dayor. I did a post that touched on this a while back.

You know, just last weekend, my 3year old niece sat & crossed her legs then told her 2year old sister "sit like a lady" & I was so proud. Good to know she's retaining the good lessons. These kids pick stuff so quick

  4. Well said sister. Sex has been perverted and abused and now, we reap the fruits. Whenever we use things the way it was not originally designed by God, the consequences will be serious.

  5. Well said, dear
I did a post on this one time. It used to bother me a lot but it was almost like I was an anti-sex advocate. I mean, so people tried to make it seem. Thank God there are still some sane people in this world.
I hope young children can always meet the right people that can lead them in the right paths; at least show them that they have another option and that is to try not to be carried away by this sex obsessed world.

  6. This is the first step in being part of a change! A determination to see a change. This must be followed with action. I like your suggestion in the last line... speak to one of those NGOs on how you could be of help to their work and vision; otherwise, you could start one too in an area you feel displeased in or with.
God will see you through D1.

    Blessings.

  7. Blessings.....
the more things change the more they stay the same. All of these things you speak so eloquently about exists before and will continue to exists, the difference? We live in a time where shame and pride is no more and apt to just do what they want, when they want regardless and inspite of righteousness, justices, inequality, lack of integrity etc.

Take care and remember through it all, you are not alone, though at times it feels like it, God is where you are.

    peace.

  9. Sigh. Parents/future parents really have their work cut out. The sexualisation of virtually everything in the media is just crazy!! Even supposedly innocent shows like 'toddlers and tiaras', one sees mothers tarting their 4 yr old girls up...for what?? There is such a thing line between normal and abnormal.. that parents/aunties/uncles really need to be vigilant and of course call out companies when they push these boundaries. but its a tiring job i tell you. As you force Pepsi to remove an advert, Coke is coming up with something similar, at a point you just want to throw ur hands up in the air.
